Nigerian musicians sweep major awards at Afrima in Lagos

Nigerian musicians stood out at the 9th All Africa Music Awards, dominating key categories as the ceremony wrapped up in Lagos on Sunday night.

The event highlighted the continent’s rich music talent, with Nigeria taking the lead in both major and fan-driven awards after a week-long celebration of African music.

Burna Boy was among the top winners, earning Album of the Year for his project No Sign of Weakness. He also shared the Best African Collaboration award with Shallipopi.

Meanwhile, Shallipopi claimed another top prize when his hit song Laho, which went viral online, was named Song of the Year.

The awards week brought together music experts and industry professionals from across Africa and the diaspora. The ceremony showcased not only established stars but also emerging talent, giving a clear picture of Africa’s current musical landscape.

Rema was the night’s most awarded artist, winning Artiste of the Year, Best Male Artiste in Western Africa, and Best African Artiste in RnB and Soul. His triple win reinforced his reputation as one of the continent’s most influential performers.

Other Nigerian artists also earned recognition. Yemi Alade won Best Soundtrack in a Movie, Series or Documentary for her song You Are, featured in the animated series Iyanu.

Veteran rapper Phyno received the Best African Artiste in African Hip-Hop award, adding to his list of career achievements.

The ceremony also celebrated rising stars. Qing Madi was recognized as the Most Promising Artiste of the Year, while Chella earned the African Fans’ Favourite award, reflecting strong support from audiences.

Talent from outside Nigeria was equally celebrated. Senegal’s Bakhaw Dioum was named Song Writer of the Year, and Algeria’s DJ Moh Green took the DJ of the Year award, surpassing several South African nominees.

Ghana’s Wendy Shay won Best Female Artiste in West Africa, South Africa’s Nontokozo Mkhize took Best Female Artiste in Southern Africa, and Tanzania’s Juma Jux was named Best Male Artiste in Eastern Africa.

The evening reinforced the international appeal of Afrobeats, a genre blending African rhythms with Western sounds. Burna Boy, a leading figure in this movement, continues to be a global ambassador for African music.

His Album of the Year win highlights both his influence and the growing worldwide reach of the genre.
